So far Sunny’s been doing really good! He’s almost 100% potty trained (probably about 95%). He is sleeping through the night and i usually wakes up around 6:00/6:30 so I’ve been getting more sleep which is REALLY good. I’ve been like 4 or 5 nights since he’s had an accident in his crate. We’ve got “sit” and “down” down pat but he’s still working on listening when I call him. He’s also having trouble with the commands “no bite”, “stay”, “leave it”, and “off.” He’s been eating bugs and chicken shit which is frustrating, because he won’t listen when I say leave it so I’m still having to follow him when he goes outside. His first official obedience training is on the 26th.
- First vet visit
Tuesday, May 23, 2023 Today was Sunny’s first Vet appointment for his puppy exam; he was checked out and determined to be in great health. Sunny weighed in at 12 pounds today. We had Sunny microchipped, and he received his D A P P #2 vaccination. His fecal flotation for intestinal parasites came back NPS-Negative.
- Meeting Sunny
Thursday, May 18, 2023 Today is an exciting day for me; mom, dad, and I have agreed that a “Service Dog” would likely help me get through some of the medical issues that I have been having for quite some time now. Dad and I went to Smothers Lab located in Magnolia, Texas today to look at a litter of Labrador puppies that I could possibly choose from as my Service Dog. The owners of Smothers Labs are Robert and Beth, they were very receptive and answered all my questions regarding the litter of pups. I was very pleased and satisfied at the great place they have for the puppies to live until they find their fur-ever homes. I was excited to be able to choose from their litter of Lab pups. Robert and Beth understood that I needed to have the puppies evaluated to ensure that the pup I chose was suitable for the Service Dog training. I texted Natalia while visiting with Robert and Beth to see when she could perform the temperament test on the pups. We all agreed that this coming Sunday would be best. As of today, there were still four puppies available at Smothers Labs from their latest litter: two females (both black), and two males (one black, and one yellow). The puppies are eight weeks old currently, they were born on March 20, 2023. Whitney is the puppy’s mama, and Jeter, from Texas Pride Labs is the Sire. Of course, the four pups were adorable, and I fell in love with all of them, but I would have to choose the one that would best fit my needs. I already had the name ‘Sunny” picked out if it turned out that I picked a male, but I was still thinking of a name if I chose one of the females. Honestly, after seeing the four pups, I was leaning towards one of the females, but the choice would have to be made once the temperament evaluations were done by Natalia on Sunday. My excitement is building.
- Sunny's first day with Me
Sunday, May 21, 2023 Mom, dad, and I met Natalia at Smothers Labs today and she conducted the temperament testing on the four pups. I was able to participate in the temperament test, I was excited to learn the process. After evaluating and scoring their performances, Natalia determined that the yellow lab would suit me best. How appropriate that I had already chosen the name “Sunny,” it will fit him perfectly. It became official today, “Sunny” is now in the Chavez family. I took custody of “Sunny,” and we started the hour-long ride home to Sealy, Texas. When we arrived home, Sunny met our two Pugs, Harley and Cami, and our Lab mix Bailey. Cami was a rescue from Pug H earts Houston, and Bailey was rescued from Burttschell Rescue in Sealy. After they got acquainted with each other, Sunny entered the house to explore and familiarize himself with our home. This will only be temporary though, when I go back to Nacogdoches, Texas to complete my last senior semester at SFA, Sunny will accompany me there. The Service Dog training will commence once Sunny is 14-16 weeks old; I’m pushing to start the training at 14 weeks. The first night at our home, I had Sunny sleep in my room in a large dog crate. He had a coupe of accidents in the house before we retired for the night. I will start potty training him right away. We didn’t sleep well the first night, I’m sure it was because Sunny was still getting used to his new surroundings, and he was probably missing his mother, sisters, brother, as well as Robert and Beth at Smothers Labs. He will get plenty of love from his new Chavez family.
